My 2022 leadership lesson series featuring hockey hall of famer
mark messier

Over the next few weeks and months I'll be sharing leadership tips I'm gleaning from reading Mark Messier's new autobiography "No One Wins Alone."

Why Mark Messier? You may be asking, here's why:

Messier is generally regarded as one of the greatest team leaders in professional sport history. He played professional hockey at the Major League level in the National Hockey League (starting with one season in the defunct World Hockey Association) for 26 seasons, beginning at age 17 and retiring at age 43.

In that time he won a total of six Stanley Cup Championships across two teams, the Edmonton Oilers (5), and the New York Rangers (1).

Three reason why I'm doing this series:

1) Mark is the only player in the more than 100 year history of the Stanley Cup Championship to be the captain of two different Stanley Cup winning teams. In hockey a team captain is much more important and highly regarded than in other sports.

2) the greatest ice hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky, played with Mark for many years and together they won 4 Stanley Cups. Messier won two Cups without Gretzky as a teammate. Gretzky never won a Cup with Mark by his side, and...

3) On the way to winning the 1994 Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers with the team trailing the New Jersey Devils three-games-to-two in a best of seven game series, Messier was quoted on the front page of the New York tabloid newspapers, saying "We'll Win Tonight," guaranteeing the victory. And, then, with the team losing 2-0 early in the second period, scored 3 goals for a Hat Trick to seal a 4-2 victory.

As Anthony Robbins would say, "hmm, something to think about?"

So for those reasons Messier is one of my all-time sports heroes for doing something I never thought I'd see in my lifetime, bringing a Stanley Cup Championship to my team, the New York Rangers.
