WHY Your small business needs to create a F.A.T. Work environment

Have you ever driven by a highway billboard and thought, I should take a photo of that, but then regret not stopping or turning around to do it?

This weekend I saw a billboard on the side of the highway driving home from vacation at the New Jersey shore. It read something to the effect of "paying $250 for registered nurses to submit job applications."

Now I will admit that driving at 65 miles per hour and reading billboards I may have gotten it wrong, but I don't think so. If I didn't, I'm not surprised by what I read.

Before the pandemic unemployment was at a 50-year low and the war for talent was fierce.

Once the vaccine began opening up the economy earlier this year the war on talent picked up again. Today it is fiercer than ever.

Companies, especially in the healthcare field, manufacturing, and other services in need of skilled technicians are needing to get creative to not just attract, but to retain workers.

Sign on bonuses, college and technical school tuition offers, and other perks previously provided to white collar jobs are now sliding over to the skilled labor market. It's long overdue in my opinion.

It is making hiring more expensive, but if if decreases the time it takes to recruit qualified personnel it's typically a net savings while helping to enhance revenue generation quicker. So it makes sense.

It will squeeze profit margins initially, though and that may be something companies have to sacrifice in the short-term.

Today I received a newsletter from my friend and colleague Roberta Matuson who provided these stats:

What this means is that you have to be doing everything in your power to first retain the team members you have and want to retain, while recruiting to fill much needed positions - to do that last month I delivered a webinar to help you create a F.A.T. Work Environment.

I know on the surface a F.A.T. Work Environment doesn't sound attractive but once you learn what it is, you will see why it is VERY ATTRACTIVE.

A F.A.T. Work Environment will make your company an employer of choice in both your industry and your community.

Or, come back later this week to read what the F.A.T. acronym represents. But, you don't have time to waste, so I would recommend the webinar first.
